You’ve heard of love triangles
and how they work.
A less well-known, but more common situation
is the love line segment.
Take three points and connect them
in a single line, but don’t connect the end points
to create an enclosed space.
For example:
A loves B, but B loves C,
and C don’t give a flying toss about either of them.
This is far more tragic,
but doesn’t yield as many opportunities
for conflict or plot, so
they make shit holiday movies.
